  • Twitter fights off fear of failure with solid second quarter numbers

    PCWorld
    29 Jul 2014 | 3:16 pm
If earnings reports could beam, Twitter’s second quarter results were positively glowing. The social network, which has been slow to find its way to profitability, announced Tuesday it added 16 million users in the quarter ending June 30 and eked out a tiny profit. In short: Skeptical analysts and haters to the left. Twitter brought in $312 million in the second quarter, $277 million of which came from advertising. Not surprisingly, mobile ads made up the bulk of that revenue at 81 percent. The network now has 271 million monthly active users, up 24 percent over the same quarter last…

I was wondering if anyone else was watching this and what they think. I saw an article in the NY Post about it before its premiere so I have been recording it and have watched the first 3 episodes and have really liked it. At first I thought it a bit contrived, but after 3 episodes there really is a lot of tension involved in couples who meet at the alter, not even knowing their names, say "I Do" and then start a relationship. There are 3 couples and they are followed separately. These were 6 professional people matched by the experts and seemingly starting married life together.

This looks like a promising new show. I liked the pilot, so I set up a seasons pass. However, I noticed that no episodes are scheduled to record. Looking at the info for the pilot, it says it first aired on 3/21/2014? Where did it air on that date? I show it aired on NBC on July 10. If I change the series option to record both repeats and first runs, will it start recording the show?

  • Microsoft's Windows Phone dilemma: Sell cheap phones or great cameras?

    29 Jul 2014 | 2:07 pm
A short time ago, I worried aloud that I had lost one of the Windows Phones PCWorld keeps on hand for testing. A colleague snickered. “Why would anyone steal a Windows Phone?” she asked. A good question—and I worry further that Microsoft’s senior executives won’t know how to answer that in a year or two.Today, I’m more convinced that Microsoft understands what it should be prioritizing on Windows Phone: the camera. I’m just not convinced they’re going far enough. Two weeks ago, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella issued a memo that laid out the priorities of the company’s smartphone…

According to Microsoft’s data, out of every four people, three have storage of less than 15 GB on their PC. This storage boost has put Microsoft in the forefront when compared to Google and Dropbox, as far as free allocation goes. The Free Dropbox accounts get a sparing 2GB, even though it may be expanded through signing up friends. While Google may offer 15 GB free cloud storage, it includes Gmail, Drive and Photos. For the first time ever, an unlimited storage has been offered by a cloud file storage service at entry level prices. Google has released the much anticipated Google Drive for Work which presents unlimited storage for as little as US$10 monthly. Since a Google Drive for Work account with less than five users is limited to 1TB storage as per user, it means that a business may spend up to $50. The incorporation of Quickoffice into the newly launched Drive grants a user the ability to not only open a Microsoft document, but also make changes to it in its innate format is a major drawcard. Almost as soon as news broke in February that Netflix had agreed to pay Comcast for a direct connection to its network, Verizon and AT&T were in line with their hands out as well. Verizon reached a deal months ago -- that so far has done little to resolve streaming issues -- and now Netflix and AT&T have confirmed that they reached an agreement in May, as first reported by Mashable. In a statement, they said the process of turning up the connections should take place "over the coming days." Netflix CEO Reed Hastings already laid out his disapproval of the ISPs and their policies, and…

To make things better, the Apple TV is adding Fox Now and CNBC to its ever-growing content repertoire, though there are the usual pay-TV caveats to consider. If you do have the right subscription, however, you can unlock each application's full potential right away, which means access to a lot more videos, live and on-demand. Fox Now, for its part, features full episodes from different shows, including Glee, Family Guy, New…
