The subject of “content protection” continues to be a complicated issue. The content production industry needs......

Starting a thread for the 2009 edition of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Going to be interesting as, for the first time, there's a new route. It will still pass Macy's, but it will be coming down 6th Avenue instead of Broadway. The reason is that the city has turned large parts of Broadway into pedestrian malls, so no (or very limited) traffic allowed. Camera positions may be different, and they may have to things differently for the performances that were right outside Macy's front door on Broadway. I'm including a link from the MTA web site showing the new parade route.

  • California Chooses Stick Over Carrot

    19 Nov 2009 | 5:00 am
Yesterday, the California Energy Commission (CEC) made it official, and unanimously adopted new energy requirements for televisions sold in the state. It sets electricity consumption limits for sets up to 58″ diagonal. The first level takes effect January 2011, at which time one source indicates a 42″ must not consumer more than 183 watts. In January 2013, more stringent requirements will take effect; that 42″ set will have to consume 115 watts or less. Unlike the federal Energy Star logo program which is optional, California’s limits will be required. This prompted an…

They have set up a new site, www.dvd2blu.com, where you can make the exchange. The HDTV world is flat and turning green. Plasma and LCD panels dominate, and now manufacturers are fighting over who can make the most environmentally-friendly televisions (since there are relatively few other meaningful differences among their features). And one of the key focal points for these efforts is to use less power. The good news is that many of them have been quite successful in their efforts. Consumers can find energy efficient flat panel TVs by picking one with an Energy Star label. This certification program is a joint effort between the U.S. Department of Energy and the…

  • YouTube pulls a Hulu -- yanking API access from Popcorn Hour (Update: Google responds)

    20 Nov 2009 | 8:59 am
Hope you weren't enjoying watching YouTube on the television screen via Popcorn Hour and other set-top boxes, as they have been given notice by the newly 1080p and network TV-friendly website that they are no longer welcome to access its content. The new Hulu-ish Terms of Service (section II, item 10) restricts API clients from the ability to "use the YouTube API in connection with any API Client created for use on television set top boxes, television game consoles, or video screens packaged and marketed as television sets;" according to Popcorn Hour COO Alex Limberis this applies to all with…

There's been an unbelievable amount of internet chatter about the MPAA's petition to the FCC to allow cable companies to turn off the component inputs on cable boxes on certain content. And while we don't think this is a good idea on so many levels, we aren't willing to lie to garner support. But evidently others are, as you see headlines and online petitions with subjects like, don't let the MPAA turn off your home theater. We really aren't that surprised, but the facts are that Hollywood wants to use this to offer new programming and the plan is to not change existing offerings, so for…

Since buying my brand new Samsung LN52B750 52 inch LCD HDTV a few weeks ago, I have nothing but praise for it. I ordered my Samsung LN52B750 model from the internet. I got free home delivery and received my TV two days after I ordered it in mint condition – and for a great price also. When I set up and turned on the TV, all I could say was WOW! It was cinematic pictures in my own living room. LCD HDTV a few weeks ago, I have to admit. But with the picture quality in the DVD player and stuck in one of my Heroes season one box set DVDs and it really did feel like Nathan Petrelli was…

  • NEWS: Picture in Picture TV goes into overdrive, 64 picture overdrive

    Stuart Miles
    20 Nov 2009 | 10:45 pm
How square eyed do you think you would get? You probably don't use the picture in picture feature much on your television, but what if you could watch up to 64 channels at once on your television at home? If 64 isn't enough, what about four times that much? (You would need four TVs, of course.) That's what one company has done here in an attempt to show off the fact that it can optimize its servers to work with multiple streams. ? How is it working? If you really must know, it's 64 HD VLC media windows tiled to run at once per television rather than live TV (your bandwidth probably wouldn't…

Power-hungry models to be outlawed It's the home of the big screen, but it seems California doesn't want people to take that big screen experience into their homes with a new bill that bans power-hungry televisions. In a bill passed on Wednesday, the California Energy Commission has voted to adopt an energy efficiency standard for televisions that forces manufacturers to abandon non green-performing televisions.? "When these standards are implemented in 2011, new TVs sold in California will be the most energy efficient in the nation. After ten years, the commission estimates the regulations…

TV to go? If you've ever been on a long journey with kids in the back of the car you'll know that after a while your kids will get restless and that means your journey quickly descends into a nightmare.?Qualcomm, the company behind most of the chipsets in smartphones around the world, believe it has the answer with the?FLO TV, a spin off from the technology it's already dabbled with in mobile phones from companies like LG and HTC. The concept is that you get a small portable dedicated device for watching television on without having to plug-in aerials (it's a mobile signal that is transmitted…
