Brand loyalty remains an important part of many consumer markets in the U.S., but according to a new report by Strategy Analytics, subscription television service is not one of them. A recent survey found that more than 2 out of 3 cable subscribers would change providers if they were offered a 20% discount. For the smaller number of people who subscribe to television from a phone company, such as Verizon or AT&T, that number is cut in half to just 1 in 3. Perhaps more telling is the fact that fewer than 22% of the subscribers overall felt that they were getting “value for the…

From the October Zeitgeist… As Octavius once said of the Roman Empire, so now says the TV industry and the advertising that supports it: we expand or we die. In the US, the once niche and piffling cable networks now command a much larger slice of the advertising pie, and in terms of quality, their output speaks volumes; Mad Men, The Sopranos, Sex and the City and Dexter; these same shows are rewarded at the annual gush‐fest that is the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. In the UK, the BBC is defending attacks on its unique position in the marketplace as a Public Service Broadcaster. It’s…

Black is back Only a few years ago the idea of getting a 50-inch Full HD plasma for ?750 was unthinkable. Now, the choice is huge, and Samsung’s polished PS50B550 joins mid-range plasmas from LG and Panasonic as excellent value screens for anyone after the perfect picture. Boasting Full HD resolution (which, on a 50-inch screen is definitely worth considering), the PS50B550 does away with online goodies like Internet@TV (found on Samsung’s higher-end TVs) and even USB video playback (only photos and MP3s can be played) to achieve an attractively low price. Aside from a few tweaks…

40-, 46- and 55-inchers coming soon Samsung has issued a press release claiming it has become the first company to commence mass production of panels for 3D LED TVs and 3D LCD TVs. "Recently, 3D displays have captured the industry spotlight", says Wonkie Chang, president of the LCD business at Samsung Electronics in the press release. "Samsung Electronics aims to lead the global 3D TV panel market in…

Vintage-styled set gets bunny-ears aerial, dials and sputnik looks Rather than debut a super-thin LED backlit effort, or a giant plasma, LG has launched an amazingly retro television set in its home market of Korea with the introduction of the Serie 1 CRT television. The 14-inch TV set comes complete with a bunny-ears aerial and detachable chrome legs. Controls are via dials on the front of the set for changing channels and adjusting the volume - although there is a remote control bundled in for when the retro novelty of getting up off the sofa to change the channel gets old. Despite the…
